About UsFairtrade Twickenham is run by David and Avril Brown. David says: "We both became Christians in 1994 and met while on the ALPHA course in 1995. We worship at All Hallows Church in Twickenham. I work as an accounts manager. My interests include (watching) football, DIY and walking. Avril works as a secretary and enjoys gardening and flower arranging. I am a voluntary representative for both Tearfund (a Christian Relief and Development Charity based in Teddington) and Traidcraft (the UK’s leading Fair Trade organisation)." What We DoAvril and I became committed to selling fairtrade products (Tearcraft crafts and Traidcraft foodstuffs) in the year 2000. We promote Fairtrade through talks and slide shows for local groups and sell fairly traded products wherever we are invited, covering a wide area. In the last year we have been to Clapham, New Malden, Kingston, Walton on Thames, various places in the London Borough of Richmond, Brentford, Ealing, Ashford, Feltham and Northolt. The number of events we attend is growing steadily and we have been asked to give follow-up talks on many occasions. We sell Fairtrade products at All Hallows on the first and third Sundays in the month (unless invited elsewhere), as well as at local fairs and by direct orders. Over the last three years, sales of fairly-traded products have totalled over £20,000, thanks to the support of the church congregation, local residents and other groups. However, we hope our efforts will help to increase the proportion of fairly traded goods sold in the years ahead. Study TourWe were privileged to go on a study tour to Sri Lanka and India in January 2003 with Tearcraft, where we visited producer groups and craft workers. We saw how fair trade had improved their lives. We met a family in Sri Lanka that work for the Gospel House producer of wooden jigsaws and crafts. A well had been sunk to provide them with clean drinking water, thus saving them many hours having to fetch water from a distant clean source. In Chennai (Madras) we visited a slum area where the Christian Missions Charitable Trust (CMCT) helped the poorest of the poor. In addition to running a soup kitchen, hospital and educational facilities were available. We also met Samuel Masih, one of the producers from the Noah's Ark Project in Moradabad in North East India. Samuel recently visited All Hallows whilst attending a fair trade conference in the UK. For more information about some of the producers we visited see the Profiles page.
